The Atlanta Hawks have signed All-Defensive guard Dyson Daniels to a four-year, $100 million rookie contract extension, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The agreement was finalized just hours before the extension deadline, securing the 22-year-old a spot on the Hawks roster alongside forward Jalen Johnson.
Daniels was acquired from the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2024 trade that sent Dejounte Murray to New Orleans, as a defensive guard.
In his first season with the Hawks, Daniels averaged 14.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and an NBA-best 3.0 steals per game while shooting 49% from the field and 34% from three.
His efforts earned him the NBA’s Most Improved Player Award, a First Team All-Defense selection, and a runner-up finish for Defensive Player of the Year.
Daniels also recorded 229 total steals, the most in a single season since Gary Payton’s 1995–96 campaign.
The extension comes after reports suggested Daniels and his agent, Daniel Moldovan, initially sought a five-year, $150 million deal, while Atlanta preferred a lower figure near $115 million.
The final four-year, $100 million compromise signals mutual commitment while maintaining future roster flexibility.
By securing Daniels ahead of his final contract year, the Hawks avoid the risk of restricted free agency in 2026 and reinforce a defensive identity centered around his perimeter presence and playmaking.
For a franchise looking to rebound from back-to-back play-in exits, Daniels’ extension represents both stability and belief in a young core capable of evolving into a postseason threat.
